What questions should I ask in my inteview?

Preparation is key for any interview and having at least two or three questions ready is a must.

You ask questions not only to gain clarity about the role but also to demonstrate that you’ve done your homework.

I repeat this often because it’s something I’m passionate about. Doing your homework is a strong way to show initiative and employers love seeing that.

Here are some questions you might ask to gain clarity:

What are the exact responsibilities for this role?

You need to understand your line manager’s expectations. Make sure you ask this question and get the details in writing in your contract.

What systems and software do you use?

Systems and software are different. A successful business will have systems in place to make the most of the software they use. Get clear on how you’ll be expected to perform your role.

Here are some questions that can show initiative:

I noticed you worked at X company. How do you find the differences between your current position and your previous one?

This requires you to check your interviewer’s LinkedIn profile to find out their previous companies. It can lead to a deeper conversation about the interviewer’s experience with changing roles.

What is the company's EVP (Employee Value Proposition)?

Many businesses are refining their EVP to differentiate from the competition. Asking this shows you’re up to date with industry trends.

The first interview is about gaining clarity on the role and expectations. It’s not the time to ask about salary or remote work, these are common red flags for employers. Save those questions for the second interview or the offer stage.

Do your homework and show your initiative.
