Mastering Your Online Resume (AKA Your LinkedIn Profile)

Overview

Recruiters are ditching job boards like Seek and heading straight to LinkedIn—and it’s not hard to see why. LinkedIn’s value is skyrocketing as the platform grows, and job boards are only getting more expensive.

Every day I speak to people in the industry who say things like, “I’ve been meaning to update my LinkedIn,” or even, “I don’t have one.”

Here’s the reality: if your profile isn’t at least 50–75% complete, you’re missing out on job opportunities, higher salaries, and career growth. And all it takes is 30 minutes to open doors to companies that actually align with your values.

So, now that I’ve got your attention, where do you start?

Headline

That little line under your name? It matters. A lot.

Structure it like this: [Job Title], [Industry] at [Company] | [Short Skills Snapshot]

This is one of the most overlooked but powerful areas of your profile. It grabs attention and tells people exactly who you are.

Pro tip: add relevant keywords here, what you want to be found for.

About

Got a resume? Great, your LinkedIn summary is where that should live.

Avoid lines like “Seeking new roles in X industry.” That’s limiting. You might end up missing out on sectors you’d actually love.

Under your summary, list 3–5 key projects. Use bullet points. For each one, include:

  • Project Name

  • Value ($)

  • Your Role/Impact (especially important for Tier 1 professionals)

Experience

This one’s simple: copy it straight from your résumé.

Keep it clean and consistent. Don’t fudge the numbers—seriously. People will find out, and nobody wants a fibber on their team.

Stick to listing 3–5 core responsibilities per role.

Bonus Tip (Optional): Add in key wins or metrics. Think: “Increased output by 30%” or “Delivered $4M project under budget.”

Education

Again, pull it straight from your resume.

Include active licenses and tickets, trust me, hiring managers love not having to chase this info down.

Sign-Off

Boom, your profile’s ready to roll.

And one last thing: Tradies, this applies to you too.

I used to think LinkedIn was just a white-collar thing. But now? Seeing more tradies jumping on LinkedIn is making life easier, for you and for us recruiters trying to find you.

Opportunities = Network

Network = Growth

Growth = Higher Pay + Better Roles

Let’s go where the momentum is.
