How to secure your first position in Australia after relocating
Now that you’ve read what not to do (hopefully!), let’s move on to what I recommend you should do to land your first role in Australia.
Tip 1 - Accreditations
There are some professionals who should definitely look at getting accredited and engineers are one of them. Engineers Australia is where you'll want to get your qualifications recognised. This can make a big difference when it comes to your job search here in Australia. Plus, getting it sorted early can even help with the visa process, so it’s worth checking out their website before you make the move.
Tip 2 - Networking
Something I’ve learned over the years is that “You’re only as good as your network.” You need to make sure employers can assess you based on your face or voice, not just a resume. Do your research and start attending local networking events where you might just meet your future employer. Engineers Australia also hosts some great networking events, so that’s another place to start building connections.
Tip 3 - Research
It’s important to research any company you're applying to. Make sure they’re a good fit for your experience. Doing this will help you find similar roles that align with your background. A good tip is to check out the company’s LinkedIn page – see where their employees worked before and use my Job Application Method to target those companies too.
Bonus Tip - Personal Branding
Don’t just hit “apply” and hope for the best. Pick up the phone! Talking directly to the hiring manager can really help you stand out. A quick conversation about your career and experience can have much more impact than just being one of many applicants with Australian experience. Get in there early and make your mark.
