How NOT to secure your first position in Australia after relocating

I want to start by saying – great job on making the move to Australia, what a country we live in down under!

The Australian job market is packed with opportunities, but landing your first role here can be tough. Why? Most companies are after Australian experience due to the highly regulated industries. This mindset isn’t helpful for anyone who's just relocated.

The first thing most people do is apply for any job with “trades,” “engineering,” or “manager” in the title, but I’m here to tell you to STOP.

This article is all about what NOT to do. The next one will cover what you should do to improve your chances.

Tip 1 – Stop applying for everything

If you’re applying for roles that don’t match your digital fingerprint (see glossary below), you’re damaging your personal brand. You don’t want recruiters or hiring managers thinking, “This person applies for anything and everything.”

Tip 2 – Stop mindlessly clicking ‘apply’

Apply, silence. Apply again, more silence… Sound familiar? It’s likely because recruiters and hiring managers are overlooking your resume, often due to a lack of local experience. You’ve got to set yourself apart. Follow my job application method (see glossary below).

Tip 3 – Watch your language

When introducing yourself to potential employers, make sure you’re using the right language. Do your research first. I’ve had plenty of people introduce themselves as “Sir” or “Mr Tom.” While I appreciate the respect, I haven’t been knighted by the King. A simple “Hi Tom” or “G’day Tom” will do.
