Why You're Getting Ghosted After the Interview and How to Fix It

You had a great interview. Shook hands.

They said they’d be in touch. You walked out thinking, “I nailed that.”

And then… silence.

You’re not alone, I see this happen all the time.

And in most cases? It’s probably a no.

So let’s fix it. Here are some practical improvements to help you avoid getting ghosted again.

1. You’re not following up properly

You leave the interview… and wait. That’s what most people do and that’s the problem.

If you're not sending a message within 24 hours to thank them and reinforce your value, you're leaving the door wide open for someone else to walk through.

What to do instead

Send a short, professional message the same day or next morning.

“Thanks for the opportunity to meet with you and Joe today. I really enjoyed the chat and learning more about the project. Confident I can slot into the team and would love to be involved.”

Respectful. Confident. Straightforward.

2. You weren’t specific in the interview

You gave the usual answers “I’m a hard worker,” “I’m a team player.” That’s textbook stuff. It doesn’t make you stand out, it makes you blend in.

What to do instead

Be specific. Talk about the project you delivered early. The risk you took that paid off. How your decision saved time, money, or headaches.

Bonus tip: Use numbers.

“I reduced rework by 20% after changing the way we managed supplier deliveries.”

Show it. Don’t just say it.

3. You didn’t bring the right energy

You might have the experience, but if you walk in flat, disengaged, or like the company should feel lucky to meet you? You're not getting a callback.

Worst trait? Arrogance. Best trait? Eagerness to learn.

What to do instead

Be present. Be curious.

Ask two or three genuine questions about the company, the project, or the role.

Not “What’s the RDO situation like?” Instead:

“What does a successful first month in this role look like?”

No one actually wants to ghost anyone. But if you’re not memorable, not proactive, or not clear, you’re easy to forget.

Be sharp. Follow up. Bring energy.

And if this keeps happening to you, send me a confidential message. I’ll walk you through your interview approach and tell you straight.
